This week we have really started to focus on exam technique for each question type, starting with shuffled sentences.

For shuffled sentences, we tell the students first just to look at the words as there may be just one word that just ‘stands out’ and simply looks like it can’t belong in the sentence. These are very easy to spot. For example:

spiders of Hannah afraid box hairy large was

Obviously the superfluous word is ‘box’.

Secondly, we tell the children to look for ‘pairs’ of words;  synonyms or antonyms within the words or instances of (especially) irregular verbs.

Examples:

  • was absent Sophie from present school Friday on

Sophie was absent from school on Friday

  • Julian went wanted cinema to the go

Julian wanted to go to the cinema
