Homework now includes all of the question types that we expect to appear in this year’s 11+, although it is impossible to second guess what may actually appear, we are including as many types as possible.
Again, we have been having fun focusing on vocabulary with an assortment of games and quizzes.
Every year we try to impress on the children that there are very few words in the English language that look quite alike and also have similar meanings, in fact we are still trying to think of some!
Some common mistakes with synonyms are:
embrace/embarrass
retrain/retain
plummet/summit
inferior/interior
precarious/precious
altitude/attitude
ample/amble
defy/deny
extract/exact
motive/motivate
conceited/concentrated
detain/contain
recipient/recipe
elude/delude
ethical/mythical
And there have been some hilarious definitions for words! Again, insight into ten year old minds:
secluded: not included
earnest: earning a lot of money
devoted: not being allowed to vote
incentive: smelling less than before
